I've always struggled with the idea of ceremonial uncleanliness. It
just doesn't make sense to me. But when I read the postpartum
cleanliness requirements, I'm struck first and foremost by how cyclical
and incomplete they are. Every time a woman has a child she needs to go
through this process anew. And what if she has twins, triplets,
quadruplets, or more?
Incomplete as they may be, these requirements prefigure Jesus' perfect atoning sacrifice on the cross. Jesus is the culmination and fulfillment of the Mosaic law (Matthew 5:17). Unlike the forgiveness purchased by animal blood, which is temporary and will be overridden by the next "transgression," the free gift of eternal life in Christ Jesus never needs to be renewed.
"Blessed assurance" indeed!
